How to tell
your story.

You don't need to be a writer. You need to be honest. Short is fine. Ugly is fine. True is the whole job.

Every story that holds together follows the same seven beats — the backbone chefs use when they sit down to write here. Walk them one at a time. A sentence or two per beat is plenty. The example under each beat comes from The Night I Almost Hung Up My Knives.

Beat 01The hero

Who is this story about? You, or a chef you know. One line: who, where, what kind of kitchen.

“A CIA-trained chef, twelve-plus years on the line in Teton Valley and Jackson Hole — the person who could handle it.”

Beat 02The problem

What was the trap? What was breaking? The hours, the money, the marriage, the bottle, the silence after service — say it plain.

“The line became the only place I knew how to stand, and the work started taking more than it gave.”

Beat 03The guide

Who or what showed you a way out? A person, a moment, a verse, a walk-out-the-door night. Who handed you the map?

“Someone willing to sit beside me without fixing me — and say, “You are not the only one who has been here.””

Beat 04The plan

What did you actually do? Step by step, in order. Not advice — what you did.

“Admit I needed help. Learn that rest is not desertion. Stay connected to people who tell me the truth.”

Beat 05The turn

What changed? What does life look like now, on the other side of it? Be specific — a morning, a shift, a conversation.

“I still love the work. I also love the person doing the work. Those two things have to share the plate.”

Beat 06The lesson

What would you tell a chef standing where you stood? One thing. The sentence you would put on the pass for the next chef.

“Do not make a permanent decision from the most exhausted room in your life.”

Beat 07The pass

Who should hear this next? Pass it to one chef. Their name is enough — we will take it from there, or leave it to you.

“If you are sitting in your car at 1 AM, thinking about walking away — tell somebody. Then pass this on to the next chef.”

The ground rules

Anonymous, always.

Use your name or don't — the story is what matters. Every story goes through Steve's taste gate before it publishes: a yes or a no, a light edit for voice. Nothing goes live raw, and earning never buys publication.

If your story earns

If you're in a dark place right now, skip the form — go to The Pass, or call/text 988. The story can wait. You can't.

Ready when you are.

Seven beats, one honest voice. The form takes about ten minutes, and Steve reads every story that comes in.
